Governing agency
The Registered Tax Return Return Preparer (RTRP) license was established by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) in 2012 for tax professionals who meet specific criteria. This license is also sometimes referred to as "IRS Registered Tax Preparer," "Paid Tax Preparer" and "Licensed Tax Preparer," but the correct term is "Registered Tax Return Preparer."
If you have a PTIN, but have not passed the RTRP Competency Exam, you were considered an "RTRP-Candidate."
In January 2013, the RTRP progam was suspended and the related CPE requirements and RTRP competency testing were also suspended.
