RTRP Renewal Process

How often does an RTRP renew their license?

Before the RTRP program was suspended, the RTRP license was renewed annually.  An RTRP renews their PTIN number, so there is not actually a separate "RTRP license."

When is my renewal date?

The PTIN must be renewed by December 31st every year.  Although PTIN numbers expire on December 31st, the system will still accept your renewal after that date.

Does the IRS prorate my CE hours or fees based on when I got the license?

Before the RTRP program was suspended, your CE requirement was prorated if you became an RTRP after January 31st of your first year.  See details on the RTRP First Year CE page.  Fees are never prorated.

There was no proration of either CE hours required or fees for RTRP-candidates.  Even if you received your PTIN on Novemeber 30th, you had to renew by December 31st and pay the full renewal fee and complete the required 15 hours of CE.

How do I apply for renewal of my RTRP/PTIN?

The IRS does NOT mail a renewal notice to you.  You must log into the PTIN system prior to 12/31 to renew your PTIN.

- > Put your renewal date on your calendar

You must submit your renewal by the deadline to maintain a valid PTIN

- > File by mail and pay by check

You can fill out form W-12 online and print the filled out form to mail, along with your check or money order.  The IRS warns that it may take 4-6 weeks to process a mailed renewal form.

- > File and pay electronically

You can fill out the form and pay online by credit card.

What is the cost of renewal?

The PTIN renewal fee is currently (2012-2013) $63 (annually).

Does FunCPE report the CPE hours earned by each RTRP and RTRP-Candidate to the IRS?

Yes, beginning in 2012 CPE sponsors report CE hours for every student we collect a PTIN from to the IRS.  Review the CE reporting requirements for IRS Approved CE Sponsors here.  We also retain a record of your course completions for a period of at least five years.

Will I need to mail in my certificates of completion with my license renewal?

No, you do not include copies of your certificates with your renewal, you simply report the CPE hours earned per year. You should retain copies of your certificates in your files in case you are selected for a random CPE audit. You can always obtain a copy of your certificate by logging into our course system at any time, even after your courses have expired (courses expire after one year in accordance with regulations).

Which FunCPE courses can I take as an RTRP, RTRP Candidate or Tax Preparer?

Effective January 2013, the IRS suspended the RTRP program and currently no CE is required.  All courses taken are voluntary, but we will report courses taken to the IRS.

An RTRP, RTRP Candidate (also called a Provisional PTIN) or Tax Preparer can select any of the Tax Courses and Ethics for Tax Preparers.

Tax courses are available in two formats:

Most Registered Tax Return Preparers/Candidates/Tax Preparers will opt for the courses using online materials, because the book courses generally provide more CE hours than you need to meet your annual 15 hour requirement.  Consider a book course if you are interested in the topics covered, or if you need more in-depth training in a specific area.

We offer "Tax CE Package # 1" ($65) designed for the 15 hour RTRP requirements:

RTRP CE Course-meets all IRS requirements
Federal Tax Update (3 CE hours)

1040 Overview-Part One (10 CE hours)

Ethics for Tax Preparers (2 CE hours)
