Certified Financial Manager (CFM)

Maintaining your CFM credential

The Certified Financial Manager (CFM) is held by over 4,000 finance professionals.  The IMA stopped testing for and issuing the CFM in 2007, but the CFM credential is still active and the IMA continues to maintain records and accept renewals for CFM holders.

All of our courses are accepted for CE credit by the Institute for Management Accountants (IMA) Certified Financial Manager (CFM) designations.

The following excerpts are taken from the IMA's Continuing Education Requirements and Rules:

Acceptable subject areas

"A broad range of subjects may be included in the programs for which hours of credit will be given. The subjects should be related to the topics covered on the CFM examination and / or to an individual’s job responsibilities.

Illustrative of the subjects that may qualify are:

  • all aspects of accounting,
  • financial management,
  • business applications of mathematics and statistics,
  • computer science,
  • economics,
  • management,
  • production,
  • marketing,
  • business law, and
  • organizational behavior."

Ethics requirement

"All CFMs and exam completers are required to complete a minimum of 2 hours of continuing education on the subject of ethics as part of their 30-hour annual CPE requirement."

Note that FunCPE does NOT currently offer an appropriate ethics course for CFMs.

Course formats accepted

"Credit also is granted for home study courses, speeches, publication of technical articles, and by examination. A program must be well organized and directed to qualify. Programs presented by organizations which are registered with the National State Boards of Accountancy (NASBA) meet the requirements of continuing education for CFMs."

The IMA accepts but does not require that CPE providers be registered with NASBA. FunCPE is not registered with NASBA, however our courses have all been developed to meet the NASBA course standards.

CPE requirements and reporting period

"The continuing education (CE) requirement is 30 hours per year.

The reporting period begins on January 1 following successful completion of the examination."
