The Certified Practitioner of Taxation (CPTx) certification was developed by the Institute of Certified Practitioners, but later transferred to the jurisdiction of Tau Alpha Chi, a professional organization founded in 1983 at Georgia State University to promote scholastic and professional excellence in the field of taxation.

The CPTx was granted upon the successful completion of an examination by Tau Alpha Chi or by a waiver of the examination based on a combination of education, continuing professional education and work experience.
